new codec issue??

Just last week I was importing mpg files into win movie maker just fine and
dropping them onto the timeline, editing and saving the video

Mpg files I can "play" on my desktop now no longer import into WMM - I get a
codec message - the codec needed for the file is not available ...

so I went to SP2 on XP and got the latest copy and now I can import the mpg
files BUT

when I add them to the timeline, they will ONLY add to the audio section -
not video shows nor can it be played. Yet when I play via window media - it
plays just fine. It appears that windows movie maker is broken somehow - or
is there some windows update that has hosed this application?

It's strange that I can play it with media player but not with movie maker

any ideas?

Hello there,

Movie Maker does not work well with Mpeg files. Its always best to convert to
avi and use that instead. If you do not have a suitable conversion program
there is a very good sight (Video Help) mention in the GREAT LINKS > KNOWLEDGE
BASE section of my website.

If you can send me a small sample of your MPEG file, or the name of the
codec as it appears in WMP9, I'll investigate.

Hello Kristen,

I am having issues with sound as well - capturing from my Canon XM-2 DV
camera, everything is fine in Adobe Premiere - and also in WMM - *unless* I
capture in DV-AVI, Then I get great video, but no sound. looking at the
file, it does seem to contain pcm-encoded audio, but with nothing in it...

Any clues as to what this can be?

If I capture to any of the wmw formats, I get audio just fine.

Thank you for your time,

Inge
