Well the 1070 is not that much better an the 1080 is way overpriced. Next best step forward is the RTX 2060 but they come in various flavours and are more expensive apart from a couple I saw.

You could save some loot by getting a slightly cheaper NVME drive and put the loot towards the better graphics card.

It is a brain teaser alright.
Haha. The difficulty is, the components I’ve listed above are already bought and paid for :)

I was going for the 1660 Super but have had my head turned a little by the 2060. You’re right, it is a conundrum.

What's your budget left for the GPU? ~$300 AUD ish?

Yeah, it was about 300AUD. I’m coming up the realisation that I might need to spend a bit more though. I think an RTX 2060 can be had for about $500. I guess the question is, is an rtx 2060 for $500 worth it over a gtx 1660 super for $350?

If you were going to go for a RTX 2060, the 3060 is only a little more and a lot better - but it's a lot more than the 300AUD budget.

I think the Nvidia GTX 1660 Super may be the one to go for after all, as it'll be fine for the sort of gaming he'll be playing for a long while. Anything else more powerful will start to jump up in price dramatically.

Thanks Ian. I've bought the MSI 1660 Super Gaming X. Hopefully it'll be more than enough for the games he plays for the next couple of years. :)

Looking forward to building this machine now!!

Some pictures along the way. I tried to upload a video to show you the lights in action, but cannot do that here. :-(

It's looking good though. Just need to get Windows on it and we're up and running.

I’d never do that to him, I’d feel too guilty. It is making me think I should upgrade though :)

Well spend some time with him on his computer and help him fine-tune it under your supervision. After about 1-2 weeks let him be on his own and hopefully, he will be just OK. The time you spend with him will be enjoyable, to say the least
