Just wondering if there were any particular recommendations in connecting
these four devices to the two IDE channels? HDD and CD on each or .... ?

TIA

Put the two drives most often used simultaneously, on
opposite IDE channels. Master or slave doesn't matter
unless the motherboard requires the OS boot drive as primary
master- most don't these days.

If there is no extensive simultaneous use of any two drives,
just put both HDDs on one channel and the two opticals on
the other to ease cable routing.

HD's are typically ATA100 these days, while optical are at best ATA66, or
even ATA33. So it's best to keep the fastest devices on the same channel,
slowest on the other (e.g., HDs on IDE channel 1, optical drives on IDE
channel 2). It also helps keep the burn process running smoothly when the
HD (source) is on a separate channels from the burner (target), regardless
of performance differences.

As ever the comments are much appreciated! Thinking abouty it from a cabling
perspective it will probably be both HDDs on one and CD's on the other,
which seems to fit with what you have both said.

Thanks!
