New 20in Dell Monitor

Hi All,

I purchased a new 20in dell monitor and installed it on my machine. I
upgraded the drivers which came with the monitor. When i attempt to get the
screen size reccomended for the monitor 1580x1240 adjusted through control
panel --> display it will not accept it an alway's reverts back to the
default.

I have checked that they are the proper drivers and the latest ones and they
are, i have a dell 8300 tower machine and was wondering whether the video
card might be the problem?

Has anyone got an idea???? Any information would be greatly received.

What video card do you have now? If you can't get an
upgrade for the software, you will need a new cad.

Is the computer's video adapter capable of supporting such new
resolutions? The monitor's "drivers" won't do a thing to increase the
capabilities of the video adapter.

Check with the video adapter's manufacturer for updated device drivers.
If none are available, you may need to replace the video adapter with
a more capable one, if you want to fully utilize the new monitor.

resolutions? The monitor's "drivers" won't do a thing to increase the
capabilities of the video adapter.

Actually, updated monitor drivers can do a better job of reporting available
resolutions, refresh rates, etc. than the default plug and play drivers and
can be essential if your monitor supports non-conventional resolutions. Like
1580x1240 (I wonder if that's a typo for 1680x1240, but that's still an odd
resolution for a 20" monitor).

But yes, if the video card absolutely will not drive a screen at that rate
then this needs to be addressed first. But a full solution might need
attacking from both ends.
