Networking xp and 98

Amanda

I'm trying to network 2 computers, one with win xp and
one running win 98. I have created the netsetup.exe file
on the xp machine, but when I try to run it on the 98
machine I get an illegal operation message and this
message "Operation cancelled due to restrictions in
effect on this computer, contact your system
administrator". Can anybody help? thx

After you set up and physically connect your computers together, the Network
Setup Wizard guides you through setting up your home or small office network.
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators
group to run the Network Setup Wizard.

Start by running the Network Setup Wizard on your Windows XP computer. With
this wizard you can:

Configure all the computers on your network to use one Internet connection.
Name your computer and provide a computer description.
Enable file and printer sharing.
After you have configured the first computer, run the Network Setup Wizard

It isn't necessary to run the netsetup.exe file on the 98 machine.
You can make the same settings that it would make. On 98, go to
Control Panel | Network and:

1. Install these network components if they're not already present:
a. Client for Microsoft Networks
b. TCP/IP
c. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft

2. Remove these network components if they're present:

a. NetBEUI protocol
b. IPX/SPX protocol
c. Client for Netware Networks

3. Click the Identification tab and specify a computer name and
workgroup name. XP's default workgroup name is MSHOME.

This is true. No need to setup the Networking wizard on 98. Just configure
the adapter as Steve said.
