Hello,

I am trying to connect two PCs with firewire. There has been many posting
that I have read that have not resolved my issue.

I have two PCs (one with XP Home and the other with Pro) that I have
connected with a firewire cable. Both PCs recognize the connection but are
unable to see the other PCs information. I want to be able to transfer large
files on multiple occassions. Files and Setting Transfer Wizard will not work
- does not recognize the firewire port, only USB, COM ports or Infrared.

Thanks

Did you set up user accounts on each machine?...for the other machine.

Have a nice one...

Trent,

not necessary, because one of the computers runs XP Home. That
computer should be seen from the other one.

If the XP Pro computer has Simple File Sharing enabled, which
probably makes sense in this combination, then it should work
both ways without any additional accounts.

Unfortunately I don't have a solution though. I'm not conversant
with Firewire connections.

Dan,

If both computers recognise the connection, can you ping each computer from the
other, successfully? If so, check your authentication on both computers.

On the XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS enabled.

Make sure that the Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest
with Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command
window.

On XP Pro, check your Local Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative
Tools) - User Rights Assignment, and look at "Deny access to this computer from
the network". Make sure Guest is not in the list.

Chuck,

SFS was enabled. I enabled the Guest account and verifed that the Guest was
not on the "Deny access to this computer from the network".

I am unable to ping the opposite PC. Available info from IP configs:

Dan,

Please provide complete ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

When you tried pinging each computer from the other, were you pinging by name or
address?

Dan,

I'm looking at your IPConfig listings, and I'm wondering which problem are you
reporting?

I don't see any Firewire devices on either computer.

What I do see is Main-Computer and Laptop apparently getting DHCP settings from
a third computer (wireless router?), and with Main-Computer additionally
connected to the internet thru a PPP (dialup / PPPoE?) connection.

Laptop appears to have 2 connections - the wireless connection appears to be
active, and the wired connection is disconnected.

So, now my questions:
1) Do you have working internet service on both Main and Laptop?
2) If you connect Laptop by Ethernet cable to the router, can you ping Main to
Laptop, and Laptop to Main (by address)?
3) Why is there no Firewire devices listed?

Cheers,
Chuck

My apologies, long day. Forgot to connect the firewire when I ran ipconfig.

The Main-Computer is wired to a Comtex DSL/router and the Laptop is
connected via a wireless connection to the same router. The Main-Computer
does have a dial-up that is not used.
1) Both computers do have a working internet service. (But I can not set up
a home network - neither computer recognizes the other machine after running
Network Wizard - they do not show up in My Network Places) - to be discussed
later in another posting.
2) Even with the Ethernet connection I can not ping the opposite computer.
3) Explained above.

Thanks for all the assistance. Very much appreciated.
