networking protocols will not load

I was wondering if anyone has run into this issue. I am trying to load
windows xp 2005 media edition on a Dell box. It meets the requirements and
does have 128 of ram. Everything loads fine but the networking protocols do
not work. In the setup process it does ask you to select typical or custom
under networking. The NIC does load and you can view it in device manager. It
has no conflicts. However if you try to view network connections there are
none. You can go under admin under control panel and manually start the
services for networking. If you do this they do start. However if you restart
the computer the network connections are not there. I did go under
admin/services and set everything to start auto but still if you restart
there are no network connections. Finally if you do manually start the
networking services manually the nic will not acquire a ip address. As I said
everything else works fine it is just the network services will not load and
let you do any type of networking.

Any ideas?

Which network services are you starting manually? They should include
Network Connections and DHCP Client.

Yes, I thought of that. As soon as this happened I did try to check the event
viewer. If you do that there is nothing. The reply you get is: no interface.
I have no protocols that will start and stay loaded. This system will be used
with a cable or dsl modem but so far in regard to networking I cannot get
anything. I loaded all the drivers and everything works with no conflicts.
Since you cannot view the log files it is kind of hard to move forward.
