Networking laptop to desktop via cables to router

Laptop and desktop both Windows Home XP and desktop Windows 98E cabled to
router. No problem with networking Desktop Windows Home XP and Desktop
Windows 98E. Connecting new Laptop cable to router, (I tried first with
wireless, but couldn't get a connection). Went through Network Wizard per MS
setup, and from the Desktop XP, I see the laptop in the Mshone, but I got
this error when trying to open the connection: "Laptop is not accessible...
You might not have permission... Network path was not found". Also on the
Laptop, I only see the Laptop files.
I went to this group for help, that talked about using permission, but the
steps that I found going into File Sharing to click "Advance", I don't have
an "Advance button", shown.
A more an knowable friend thought the hone version needed a file download
for tis common problem.

Networking Windows 98 and Windows XP, and getting "Laptop is not accessible..."
could be any number of issues. One of the most common causes of this problem
would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other security
component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be the cause
of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Also, since its a Windows 9x and NT based combination:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-9x-9598me-and-browser.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-9x-9598me-and-browser.html

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from the Windows
XP computer, and "ipconfig /all" from the Windows 98 computer, so we can
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Bob,

OK, start by reading my article on Windows 98 vs XP. Disable the Browse Master
on the Windows 98 computer. Then look at the firewall situation on both
computers.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-9x-9598me-and-browser.html

The errors "not accesible.... might not have permission.... network path was
not found..." are symptomatic of browser problems.

This all looks OK. Are you sure you have sharing enabled on the laptop
and at least one folder enabled for sharing? And are you sure you
don't have any filter enabled on the router?

Good luck, jimbo

I guess I started with too much information.

1. I want my Laptop networking to share files and access
the printer.
2. I have Home on both computers and 98E on the 3rd PC.
3. I have all firewalls turned off and antivirus.
4. I have setup the Home desktop and 98E networking, a year
ago and have no problems.
5. The home desktop can see the home laptop, but can’t connect.
6. The home laptop can only see it's own files in view network group.
7. Yes, I have all files set for sharing.

Thanks for all your input to this problem

Bob,

What you are describing is, pure and simple, a browser conflict. The Windows 98
and Windows XP browsers don't get along well on the same LAN. This problem will
come and go, depending upon which computer is restarted or disconnected from the
network. Read my articles for details about the situation.

The problem can also be exacerbated by a personal firewall. Read other posts in
this forum. Third party personal firewalls, if disabled, can still cause
problems. Un installing any is sometimes the only solution. Again, read my
articles.

Chuck, I have all personal and other wise firewall disabled.
I have no problem networking Home and 98E,. and have been
doing that for almost a year, (I sorry I mentioned networking
the 98E, it has thrown this problem in a tangent).
Please help me on my Home Laptop networking to Home
Desktop problem connection.
Also, have you heard that MS has a download fix for this?
Thanks again for hanging in there for me.

Bob,

I'm not sure how to keep saying this. Windows 98 and Windows XP, on the same
LAN, can have problems. Whether or not it worked for a year, in your case,
adding a third computer can cause your problem. I'll explain the browser issue,
if you wish, but you're better off reading my article.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html

And disabling personal firewalls is not a good solution either. You have to
either activate then un install, or activate then properly configure, any
personal firewall.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html

There is no download fix for either a browser conflict, or for a misbehaving or
misconfigured personal firewall. You have to fix the problem.

And Bob, please reply after my replies. It will make this easier for both of
us, in the long run.

Chuck,
Well, I will disconnect my wife’s 98E Desktop from the Router, but she will
not be able to get on the internet and I won't be able to network to her
printer. It is worth a try.

Bob,

Disconnecting the Windows 98 computer will certainly remove the problem, but it
won't be a good test of the solution. You need to disable the Browse Master.

Chuck, I'm back again.
This is the steps that ou gave in your link:

To stop the Windows 9x Browse Master:
From Control Panel - Network, double click on "File and printer sharing for
Microsoft Networks".
(Do you mean "Client for Microsoft Networks" or "File and printer sharing",
I can't click them both at the same time.)
In "File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks Properties", change the
Value for Browse Master to Disabled.
(I tried each one, but there wasn't a "Browse Master shown" in 98E)
Hit OK, and restart the system.
I must be doing something wrong.

Bob,

Should be File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks Properties - the
Browser ("Browse Master") is a server component. What do you have on the
Advanced tab?

Sorry about delay getting back, I had to make a trip.
This is what I am doing, per your instructions, on the 98E:
1. In the "Controp Panel", I open "Network".
2. I highlight "Client for Microsoft Networks" and select "File and Printer
Sharing".
3. I get 2 check boxes, a an b
a- "I want to be able to give others Access to my files"
b- "I want to be able to alow others to print to my printer"
4. There is no Advance button, just OK and Cancel
I'm I were you are asking me?.

Scroll to the END of the list which STARTS with "Client for Microsoft Networks",

Chuck, thanks for your trying to help, but we just aren’t communicating.
I don’t know what your skill level is, but there is NOT any Advance button
in the, "File and Printer Sharing", window. Maybe you have the full version
of 98E and not the upgrade version. I will try some whare else, since I
know
the Laptop can be setup for sharing, there just is one link missing.

Bob,

Regardless of where you try for advice, you're going to have to disable the
Browse Master. And one way to disable the Browse Master is from "File and
printer sharing for Microsoft Networks Properties".

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-9x-9598me-and-browser.html

You can also change the registry key, if you want to play with the registry.
Change HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\IsDomainMaster
to FALSE.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/registry-editor.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/registry-editor.html

Google for "disable browse master" if you wish, you'll get that advice. I
didn't make it up myself.

Chuck, I see now that you were asking me to find the "Browse Master", and I
was looking in WINDOWS 98E for it! Now I get it, you are asking me to look
in the LAPTOP WINDOWS XP, when I saw the "HKLM" key. The answer;
IsDomainMaster is "False" on both WINDOWS XP computers. I guess I will need
to go the USB Flash Drive route to printout or transfer data.
