Networking & Firewalls

Having given up on trying to use ICS using a direct Ethernet connection I
took advice of the group and purchased a broadband wireless router/switch
and PCI adaptor and, bingo, both computers can access the internet. However,
I was still getting problem sharing files between the computers, which in
the end I discovered was due to the firewalls. First computer, connected to
the switch was running Norton Internet Security and the second one via the
wireless connection was running ZoneAlarm. In the end I removed ZoneAlarm
and used NIS on this computer as well.

What is strange, however, is that I have to turn off both Personal
Firewalls, establish connections then turn the firewalls on again. From that
point I can continue to see shared folders from both computers. Why do I
have to turn off and on the firewalls to get things working?

Thanks, Graham

Click "Personal Firewall" in NIS. Select "Configure" and then on NETWORK tab
enter IP addresses for the two computers as "Trusted" devices. You can get IP
address for each PC by doing start/run "cmd" and then "ipconfig" in the DOS
window that opens.
