Networking an XP to an existing ME home network

I currently have a network of two computers both running ME. They work fine
file sharing and printer sharing. Internet connection is fine too. The
settings for this network are as follows:

2) Go into your Control Panel and double-click on the Network icon. Make
sure you have the following items installed:
· Client for Microsoft Networks
· Your Network adapter
· TCP/IP
· IPX/SPX
· File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
3) If IPX/SPX is not listed, please take the time to install it now. If
IPX/SPX and/or Netbeui are not listed as available protocols, please see Tip
#2 further down this page.
4) Double-click on Client for Microsoft Networks. Make sure 'Log on to
Windows NT domain' does NOT have a check in the box next to it. Select 'Logon
and restore network connections'. Click OK.
5) Double-click on your network adapter, and click the BINDINGS tab. Make
sure both TCP/IP and IPX/SPX are listed and both are CHECKED. Click OK.
6) Double-click on TCP/IP, click on the tab that says BINDINGS and un-check
File and Printer Sharing. Click on the tab that says ADVANCED, and where it
says 'Allow Binding to ATM,' make sure the value is NO. Ensure there is a
check in the box at the bottom of the window that says 'Set this protocol to
be the default protocol'. Click OK.
7) Double-click on IPX/SPX and, on the NetBIOS tab, make sure it is
UN-checked where it says 'I want to enable NetBIOS over IPX/SPX'. (Unless
you are connecting to a Windows 2000 PC, in which case you will want this box
to remain checked). Click on the Bindings tab and make sure that Client for
Microsoft Networks and File and printer sharing BOTH ARE checked. Then click
OK.
8) Double-click on File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. Click
once on Browse Master and make sure its value is set to Automatic. Click once
on LM Announce and make sure its value is set to NO. Click OK.
9) Below the ADD button, you’ll see a line that says 'Primary Network
Logon', click the down arrow in the window below that and select 'Windows
Logon'.
10) Below that, you’ll see a button labeled 'File and Print Sharing…', click
it once. Make sure that 'I want to be able to give others access to my files'
is checked and 'I want to be able to allow others to print to my printer(s)'
is also checked. Click OK.
11) Click on the IDENTIFICATION tab and change your workgroup name to
WORKGROUP (please use all capitol letters, the workgroup name can be
case-sensitive on some PCs).
12) Click on the Access Control tab and make sure that Share-level access
control IS selected.

After I set this network up I added another computer to the network running
XP. Everything was working fine for a short period of time, but all of the
sudden I had no Internet access or file sharing. I messed with a few thins
on the XP computer and got the Internet to work, but no file sharing. As it
stands now, I have no Internet access once again and no file sharing from the
XP. The ME units can see the XP, but the XP cannot see the ME. I do have EZ
Armor installed, but I believe the settings are so file sharing is allowed,
and I don’t think that would matter because it’s not letting me have access
to the Internet anyway. Also, it did work for a short period of time with
the EZ Armor installed. Any help getting this frustrating network set up so
it will be reliable would be very appreciated.

Can each PC ping the other by IP address? Can each PC ping the other by
name?

I am not really sure how to ping each computer. I just went through your
directions again and now I have the two ME computers seeing each other fine.
The one XP not seeing either. And one ME seeing the XP and the other not
seeing the XP. All have access to the internet. I am not sure how to ping
each, but if that will help and you can tell me how that would be great.

On Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type CMD and click OK
At the prompt type PING followed by the IP address of one of the other
computers.

For example, if one of the WinME PCs has an IP address of 192.168.0.3, then
on the WinXP computer you would type PING 192.168.0.3 and hit enter.

On the Windows 98/ME PCs, the process is the same, but instead of typing
CMD, you must type COMMAND. Again attempt to ping each computer from each
computer.

That sounds easy enough, but How do I find out the IP address of each
computer? Also, what do I find out if I ping each computer and can or can't
see them? And finally, what do I do if I can or can't see them by pinging the
other computers? Sorry I'm not too advanced on computer networking to
unerstand all these commands. Thank you for your help so far though.
