Networking 98se and XP Home

Home network with a external Zoom DSL modem and router. Each computer
connected to the router with internet function working. Wired with cat5e.
The 98 machine evolved from a dial-up modem, to internal DSL modem, to
network card. I have an HP printer hooked to the XP which the 98 can
currently print to.

The 98 computer can map a drive to my XP and view and move files. I can not
see either computer in network neighborhood from the 98, although I could at
one time. When I click N.N. I get a message with a "Windows Explorer" title
bar that says: "Unable to browse the network. The network is not accessible.
For more info...help..."Network Trouble shooting" which goes blank when I
try to use it. On the 98 machine I can go to windows
explorer/tools/find/computer and see the xp machine and access the hard
drive. Should I be using user level or share level on this 98 machine?

In my trying different settings I have gotten : An error occurred trying to
access the address book. Administrator is the only listing.

On the 98 machine I'm down to Client for Microsoft Networks, D-Link
DFE-530TX+ PCI adapter, TCP/IP with NetBIOS checked but grayed out & bound to
Client for Microsoft Networks & File and printer sharing for Microsoft
Networks. Allow Binding To ATM = No. DNS is enabled. WINS config = Disable
WINS Resolution, Obtain IP address Automatically. Primary Network Logon =
Client for Microsoft Networks

In IP configuration: Adapter address 00-0D-88-2D-47-34, IP Address 10.0.0.7,
Subnet mask 255.0.0.0 (not the same as the XP), Default Gateway 10.0.0.2,
Node Type Broadcast, NetBIOS resolution Uses DNS is checked. I have a host
name that pretains to my ISP and a DNS server address.

I have removed all Symantec products from both machines with the vendor
uninstall.

On my XP machine I can go to My Network Places and go to View Workplace
computers and see the XP and the 98. When I click the 98 machine I get the
"\\Win98 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the ad........ The network path was not found."
I can ping the 98 with an IP address, but not by name. I can search for the
98 machine by IP & it shows up, but not by name. When I click the search
results from the IP search I get a log on window for user name and passwork.
I am not sure what to do with this log on. The XP displays its info when
clicked from View Workplace Computers

The ipconfig info is correct but the subnet mask address is 255.255.255.0
which is different from the 98 machine. Node type = unknown. IP routing
enabled = no. Wins proxy enabled = no

I am using Main-XP for the network name and M & N as the user. Does the
user have anypart in the network connection. I also have Guest turned on.

"The server Win98 could not be found on the network" is one error message I
have gotten.

XP info : Local Area Connection Properties: Client for Microsoft Windows -
RPC = Windows locator, File & Printer sharing for Microsoft Network, QoS
Packet Scheduler (from default on XP installation), TCP/IP - Obtain IP
address automatically, Obtain DNS server address automatically, TCP/IP
advanced - IP settings: DHCP enabled & automatic metric, DNS: append primary
& connection specific DNS suffixes, WINS: Enable LMHOSTS Lookup, Enable
NetBIOS over TCP/IP - Options: TCP/IP filtering enabled = all adapters.
Authentication not checked. ICF not checked. XP machine has an on board :
Realtek RTL 8169/8110 family Gigabit Ethernet NIC Physical address
00-0D-61-44-73-7B

I have run Network Diagnostics on the XP and everything passed.

I am granting access by right clicking on the drives in windows explorer and
using sharing.

I have been working on and building computers for over 10 years as a hobby,
but have never had to deal with any networking until now. I have to plead
ignorance.

I have been reading the newsgroup for info and tried many different things I
have read and have not found the solution for my problem.

I am guessing that I have a setting or access issue. Again, my networking
skills are slim to none, but I'm learning the hard way.

Any help with this situation is welcome.

Thanks, still working on it, I have already made some progress. I changed
the submask address and can now see the network on the 98 machine, but I lose
my internet. I'm not giving up though.

again, Thanks

Paul,

why fiddle with these settings at all? Enable DHCP on the router
and set all computers to automatic, no IP address, no subnet
mask, no standard gateway, no DNS servers.

That's the most elegant way to go about things.

Thank for the links. I ended up installing NetBEUI and everything is
functioning properly. Most of the info I had read said not to use NetBEUI,
but what can I say. IT WORKS! So much for my first network lesson. It only
took a week and all my free time.

Again Thanks.

I had the same problem on my home network including the TCP/IP with netbios
checked but greyed out on the win98SE machine. I enable IPX/SPX on the
win98SE machine only and all of a sudden everything worked.
