Networking 2 Win XP computers using network cards

L

Loring Hutchinson

I had 2 computers networked and working fine. I had a chance to get a
better computer for one of the older ones and now I am having trouble
getting the new combo to work

The old combo was this: Host computer was a P4, Win XP, ISP Earthlink
satellite.
Client computer: an old compaq, Win 98.
Both computers have network cards and a LAN line connecting the two.

New setup, Replaced the Compaq with a P3 Gateway, Win XP Prof.
Took the network card out of the old Compaq and installed it in the
Gateway. Ran the Network setup wizard on the 2 computers and they
are not working. I can't get online with the client computer. Should
say that my ISP is an Earthlink Satellite hookup.

I can ping from the host computer to the client OK Going back the
other direction, ping doesn"t work.

My specific question is this?Clicking on the network icon in the
control panel, highlite TCP/IP, click propertiesI get to specify the
followinf IP addesses.
IP address 198.168.0.4 I specified this because that was the
original setup. Subnet mask as usual.
DO I NEED AN address in the Default gateway of the client computer??

DO I NEED and addreess in the DNS server block of the client
computer?? Both preferred and alternate.

I ahven't messed with anything on the host computer because it was
working before I changed computers.

TIA Loring

This sounds as if you enabled Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
on your "host" computer so that you could share your Earthlink service.
I assume that the satellite connection is via USB to the "host" computer.

If this is in fact what you did, you need to configure the NIC in the
new "client" computer to obtain its IP address automatically. Doing so
will permit ICS to assign not only an IP address but addresses for the
default gateway and DNS server as well. Alternatively, you have to set
these values manually. Again, assuming that you are using ICS, set both
the default gateway and the primary DNS server to 192.168.0.1 which (and
you may want to confirm this) should be the IP address of the NIC in the
"host" computer.
