Networked Win2K PC can't access internet

Network: DSL modem, Linksys router, terminal server (remote admin
mode), 2 desktop Dells.
Both the server and one of the desktops can access the internet. The
other desktop will NOT access the internet, but it IS on the network.

The offending PC will successfully ping the server (both by DNS name
and by IP address) and the router, but will not ping an address on the
internet.

I have restarted it, and done some basic troubleshooting. What would
you check for at this point?

Compare the outputs of ipconfig /all. Make sure all software
firewalls are turned off while testing.

What does traceroute tell you about the route that packets are taking to the
outside world.

Try a traceroute to 4.2.2.2 ( tracert 4.2.2.2 ) - It may well enlighten you.
4.2.2.2 is one of AT&T's public name servers.

An excess of default routes, or completely wrong routing information, probably.

How do the desktops acquire IP addresses on your local network? How do they
determine the address of the router. (Is the linksys your default gateway to the
internet (via the DSL modem?)

I have much the same problem, but it started after an update. I posted this
on Win Update, but no one has responded

I have a Win2000 system, a Linksys TA/router and a cable modem. I had to
reinstall Windows and after I updated (about 37 of them) I couldn't get on
the internet even though the connection showed active. Using ipconfig
/release then /renew, it said that there was a DHCP error. I heard it might
be because of KB898461 but that seems to be for Win XP. I reinstalled
Windows (Thus, I have Internet), but I am scared to update Windows. If it
happens again, how do I work around it?
