Network problem ,,driving me nuts , can someone shed some light??

Ever since i updated my computers to sp2 i'm having some network
problems.

Here's what i have ,,, my main computer running xp sp2 , my two kids each
have their own computers networked with mine through a router , both
running xp sp2 ,, i have some files on my computer that i want them to be
able to access ,, before updating the computers to sp2 i had them running
fine with them able to print to my printer and access the files.

Now i don't know if it's a problem with sp2 or not ,, so don't think i'm
slamming or saying that's it's the cause ,, it's just that i didn't hear
about any problems until after this had been done ,, and at that for some
time after it was updated.

My daughters can see each other's computers and access them from one
anothers ,, i can see both of theirs and access them from mine ,, but
they can see mine but not access the files that i've allowed for them or
my printer.

I've tried running the network wizard and shutting down the firewall on
all the computers ,,, i really don't want windows firewall anyway as the
router works better as a firewall anyway.

What could be the missing link in all of this??? I'm stumped ,, i've
tried everything i can think of and it's starting to hurt :)

Thanks in advance.

If you are running Windows XP Pro, open Windows Explorer and select Tools |
Folder Options. Go to the View tab. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the
list and see if Simple file sharing is checked. If it is, uncheck it as
this will cause everyone to authenticate as guest. Guest account is
disabled by default.

Hi,
but they can see mine but not access the files that i’ve allowed
for them or my printer.

Just to cover all the basics.

1> Make sure you are all in the same workgroup. (which I am assuming
you are)
2> Make sure your daughters have accounts on your computer with the
SAME username and password that they use on their own machines. Did
your daughters change their passwords? That would do it. Even in a
workgroup, Windows authenticates via username and password.
3> Make sure you are all in the same IP subnet. I am assuming you are
using a DHCP router so more than likely your IP’s are OK.
4> Turn off Simple File Sharing - Tools-FolderOptions-View Tab very
bottom.

Try Mapping a drive to the share. If that doesn’t work, try mapping
using your credentials. (Connect using a Different User Name). If
that doesn’t work try mapping to the IP of your machine instead of the
name.

It depends on what your error is. It may simply be a Netbios issue
where the Master Browser hasn’t replicated yet and after awhile the
shares will show up. You can fix this by turning off the Computer
Browser Service on both your daughters machines and then restarting
your Computer Browser service.

The BEST way to see what you can or can't access is to use IP addresses
only. If you want to use names you can but should put names and IPs in the
hosts file IP addresses are simplest.

Open Internet Explorer
in the Address Bar where you normally put in your web addresses enter
\\192.168.2.11 or whatever the other computers IP address is

once you do this you should see whatever folders and printers that are
shared.

You can right click a folder and choose map network drive. Double clicking
on a printer will install it for you.

Don't know the IP of the computer go to start run type in CMD then when you
get the command box type ipconfig and you will get the computers IP address
don't use a web site if you have a home network as they will only show you
the address of the router.

But i don't have a user/pass on their computers and i can access theirs
okay ,, plus they don't have accounts on each others computer and they
can access each other ,, they just can't access mine ,, mine doesn't even
show up in the "Entire Network" ,, something that really made me laugh ,,
is i repair/upgrade computers for friends , and i put one down on my
bench and hooked up the network cable to it to get some updates from the
web ,, and it showed up on their computers right away with no set up
whatsoever. She had it set up for networking at her house with her
family's computers ,,but my kids computers recognized it right away
,,though it did state that they didnt' have permission to access the
folders when you clicked on them.

Yes i'm using a DHCP router

Done that already,,,,

I've had that happen before where its' taken time to replicate on the
other machines ,,but i've been trying to get this going for a couple of
days now ,,should have been there already :) they might be slow ,,but
not that slow *L*

Why bother asking? The ****ing idiot fell flat on his gormless face with his
****witted point "1>". It stands to reason that everything else the ****er
wrote is full of crap, incomplete, or wildly innacurate.
