Network Printer Sharing

I am using XP Home on both my laptop and my desktop. Both are
network-connected via Ethernet cable (through a router) to a residential
gateway and hence to a cable broadband internet connection. I need the
residential gateway because it also has a phone connection for my wife's
third computer to tie into the network via HPNA. The network works fine.

The problem is that I would like to print from my laptop and can't. The
printer (HP 4P LaserJet) is connected via a parallel port to my desktop. I
have done all the naming and enabled printer sharing etc., and while I can
recognize the printer from my laptop, when I try to print it just goes into
the print queue and that's it.

What do I need to do? Thanks to all in advance.

How EXACTLY are you connecting/mapping to the printer.
Assuming that the name of the desktop computer is office:
You should go to Start>Run then type \\office this will show you any
shared items on the computer named office. Then clcik on the printer. It
will then ask to map it for you if you have not already done so.
