Network Places does not list Domain Controller.

hello

On my Windows 2000 computer when I open My Network Places and select
Entire Network and then select Microsoft Windows Newtork I get a
listing of all the computers in the network except my main Windows
Server 2003 Domain Controller. My secondary domain controller is
listed.

On the same computer at a DOS prompt if I issue the NET VIEW command I
again get a listing of all the computers in the network except for the
main Domain Controller.

However I can connect to a share on the "missing" server using NET
USE s: \\SERVERNAME\software.

On the domain controller in question when I look under My Network
Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network - DOMAINNAME I
get an error message.

Domainname is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to
find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently avaliable.

I am logged on to the server with an account that has administrator
perivledges. On the server I am running DNS server and WINS server.
The server is also using Routing and Remote Access for a VPN
connection to a remote office.

help, thanks

What is the "IPCONFIG /All" output from both the "mystery server" and one of
the network clients that can't see it? (give the two sets of specs) I assume
you are running RFC Private Addresses, so there is no need to "hide" the
IP#s,..we're all using the same thing.

How do you handle DNS for the LAN?

You may find that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled on the Domain Controller -
this is on the WINS tab of the Advanced dialog of the network connection's
TCP/IP properties.

NetBIOS over TCP/IP is required for "browsing" to work, but not for most
other normal networking activities (e.g. accessing shares on other
computers; net use; etc.).
