I have 3 computers that I am trying to network together, through a linksys
router -
befw11s4. newest frimware installed
this is new to me but from reading forms this is what i have done so far.I
had it working some what last night but after i shut them down, something was
reset.
2 computers xp, 1 computer is 98se
all computers have the latest wins. updates
-enable net bios over tcp/ip all 3 computers
-opened guest file through dos on both xp
-opened file sharing in both xp firewalls
-icmp settings allow incoming echo request
-workgroup name is the same
-latop has wins firewall shut off becuase of third party software,Trend
Mirco internet security, ver. 11.40.0.5015 with home network setting turned on
-tried to map network drives but drive letters missing on all 3

1-computer-ferret -ken -cannot ping kids or laptop
2-computer-laptop -kenneth -can ping ken but not the kids
3-computer-kids -bandit -can ping ken but not the laptop

1-computer can see all three in workgroup and has access to files on
kids, but none to laptop "path not found" you may not have permission in my
network places it can see all shared files but only access to kids.
2-computer can only see itself in workgroup,in my network places it can see
and use files on ken only to take files out of folder it cannot add any, but
no kids
3-computer does not see anything in network

Try:

1. On Ken disable local area connection 2. Edit the regisry to configure
Broadcast (b-node) - See:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;160177

2. On Kenneth disable the wireless connection. Edit the regisry to
configure Broadcast (b-node) - See:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;160177

3. On Bandit edit the registry to set MaintainServerList to 0. See:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;246489

4. Make sure that file shares are properly configured on each machine.

3-computer does not see anything in network

<SNIP IPConfig from all 3 computers>

Start with possible connectivity problems please.

When you say "cannot ping", what error are you getting? Are you pinging by name
or ip address?

From each computer, ping all 3 ip addresses.
1) Ping 192.168.1.101.
2) Ping 192.168.1.102.
3) Ping 192.168.1.103.
Report error messages from all 9 tests please.

And now, for my extreme curiosity, what is 1-computer-ferret? Do you have a pet
with a computer?

Cheers,
Chuck

Try:

1. Uninstall the Trend Micro Internet security software on the laptop -
this is probably blocking ping echos and NetBios connections.

2. Edit the registry on Ken to force broadcast node - it is still showing
node type unknown.

Figured out to allow excptions Trend Micro Internet security software, from
laptop-in my network places I can see and use files from kids, bandit and from
ferret ken. but i cannot ping laptop by ip or name do not know if this is
important because I can use the shared files now. Also can see all computers
in work group.

From ferret -ken- I use all shared files from laptop, kenneth and from
kids, bandit. Can see all computers in workgroup

2 down one to go

From kids bandit there is no one listed in network and i was only able to do
half of the http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;246489
computer-kids -bandit -went to registry changed maintainserverlist in 2
locations from a 2 to a 0,do not know how to get in to lmhosts file.or what
my domain name or network basic name or what ip i would put in the file?

Most likely Trend Micro is blocking ping echoes on the laptop - this is a
typical firewall feature and there is undoubtedly a way to turn it off.

On bandit, click Start/Run \\ken ENTER. If an Explorer window opens showing
the shares on ken, then name resolution and file sharing is working - and
the issue is confined to browsing. If this is the case, then on bandit you
could simply create shortcuts to \\ken and \\kenneth.

Browsing is primarily designed for use on networks where clients do not know
computer or share names. It is inefficient because it can take up to 12
minutes for a newly started computer to receive an updated browse list -
wait at least this long before concluding that browsing is not working on
bandit. Also, make sure that all machines have the same workgroup name.
