I setup an ISP nemtwork with win2000. I have 3 pc in my
net and an access server with 20 IP address pool. 2 of
pc's run win2000 and one winxp. my network is a workgroup.
I can ping all of them from all. but when i whant to
access to shared folders in any of them that run win2000
from any that run win2000 (or win xp ) get the error
message "Network path was not found". only win xp shared
document are accessible from others.

???
thanks,

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers (W2K/XP's). Got File- and printersharing loaded? Is
Netbios over TCP/IP enabled (Advanced properties of TCP/IP, tab WINS)?

Hi Marina,

1- My computers are in the same work group.
2- All user accounts are the windows default and only
administrative password was changed and is same in 2
win2000 computers.
3- File and print sharing are loaded.
4- NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled but no WINS address is
assignd.

Now one of the win2000 computers can access winxp but not
other win2000. winxp cannot access any. other win2000 can
not access workgoup at all.

Hi RSK,
Please run the following command from the Winxp system from a DOS
prompt.

Nbtstat -A x.x.x.x (where x.x.x.x is the ipaddress of the
inaccessible W2K system)

Please post the results. Do you have any 3rd party firewall services
installed on the W2K system. Try booting the W2K system up in SafeMode
with Networking, then see if you can access it.

Thank you,

Did you try booting the server in Safe Mode with networking and then try
attaching to the share?

Thank you,

How come you're using public IP's on your lan? You better setup your lan in
a private IP-range like 192.168.0.x.

Hi Alan,

I test safe mode with net but the problem was not solved.
But I test another win2k in same net configuration without
micosoft security update and the problem was solved. (the
new win2k port 139 was open). but i want to prevent
opening that port for security. what is the solution?

best regards,
RSK.

Hi RSK,
Well you changing the thread on me.
Some information:
1. Port 139 is the Netbios over TCP port. If netbios is enabled on the
computer, this port will be open. This is the same port Downlevel clients
use for NamedPipe connections hence \\computername\share.

2. Windows 2000\XP above OS's can have Netbios disabled and still make
\\computername\share connections to eachother. The NEW port being used is
port 445, this is SMB over TCP or Direct Host SMB.

3. This thread started that you couldn't make a connection to the server
using \\computername\share, what exactly is it that you are trying to
accomplish.

"Network Path Not Found" is the title, but now you are stating you do not
want port 139 open. Very simple, disable Netbios over TCPIP on the TCPIP
properties. But then please note from a NETSTAT -AN output that port 445
is open allowing W2K and above OS's to make to SMB connections.

Thank you,

Hi Alan and thanks for your guides.
I tset NetStat -AN and found that port 139 is in listening
state however when i use superscan v3.0 it's not in open
ports.
