Network Not Found at Bootup

I just got my first laptop and it's my first wireless connection to my
network.

When I shut down and restart it hunts for a minute or so and reports
sometimes it cannot make a connection with my network -- shows a big
red X between a sketch of the computer and the router. (Sometimes it
does connect.)

When I then go to the Control Panel and Network Sharing, and Connect
to a Network and my network is listed. I double-click on it and it
connects.

At this point I can reach the internet, but sometimes I can reach my
other computers on the wired part of the network and sometimes I
can't. So far I've not deduced a pattern to this behavior.

The computers on the wired part of the network are XP Pro. I'm
always close to my router and the signal strength always shows all
green bars.
