Network Major Slowdown Problems

Having Problems with network. Every time my moms laptop
computer is connected to the main desktop, to connect to
the internet, The Main desktop slows down completely.
Mouse movement is jerky, Programs freeze, Messenger is
disconnected, Programs crash, However this happens after
about a minute of the laptop being connected.
This shouldn't happen,The desktops specs are good:
3.06 gig pentium 4
1 gig RAM
80 gig hard drive
Anybody have any idea what the problem may be?
I have checked my nortons settings, home networking isnt
blocked.

Hi, Are the laptop and the desktop running the same
operating systems? By what means are they networked?
(E.G. USB, Crossover, Hub)
