Network Logon Failure with W98 and WME

Can't get Vista Net to Logon to Win ME or Win 98 boxes unless I set the
shares on the old Win boxes to no password. Then Vista connects.

Trying to get WME or W98 to connect to Vista just isn't happening for me. I
can see the shares on the Network Neighborhood, but when I click on a Vista
share, the hourglass just spins and spins.

The box I put Vista on was an XP Home and networking went fine.

I searched all the websites and BLOGS and am still clueless.

Hello,

Please try the following steps ... this will change the way Windows Vista
authenticates with other computers to the same setting that Windows XP uses.

*** These steps change default security settings of Windows Vista.
*** The result: your machine will be less secure by changing these settings.

- Click Start
- Click Control Panel
- Click System and Maintenance
- Click Administrative Tools
- Double-Click Local Security Policy
- In the left pane, click the triangle next to Local Policy
- In the left pane, click Security Options
- In the right pane near the bottom, double-click "Network security: LAN
manager authentication level"
- Click the drop-down box, and click "Send LM & NTLM responses"
- Click OK

Did that. No joy. Tried lowering all the security levels. No help.
Changed WME logon to Windows Family Logon. No change.

Maybe it is this Kansan sun or something in the water?

Thanks.

I have the same problem and have basically given-up until the next beta
version is released. Even tried establishing an account, with full
privileges, on the Vista box (like we used to do on WinNT). Don't think
it's the water because I'm in Georgia - must be the sun or global warming!

I'll keep trying different approaches as time permits. If I hit anything
good, I'll post it. Meanwhile, I can share files over the Vista by sharing
the WME and W98 with no passwords. Funny that not many are reporting this
problem.

I am a Georgia transplant to Kansas. Maybe it has something to do with
Georgia. Kinda like the Atlanta gridlock.

Your not alone...
I am having a similar problem too. I have an old Window 98 which I trying to
reconnect to the network printer through the main computer which as now been
installed with Windows Vista. My notebook computer has Windows XP Pro and I
was able to add & create a printer through the same computer(Vista) in
order to print from my notebook computer. Before I can rule out any
possibility that maybe windows 98 machine doesn't have the program
capabilities to connect to vista? Please let me know.
