Network lag after idle time help:

The problem:
After I let PC set idle for 10 mins or longer, I click on any
web site and it takes 20-30 seconds (each and every)
time to start downloading data. I can time it by looking at the data light in
the DSL modem.
The odd thing about it is:
once starts surfing, it's normal (meaning; it loads pages as soon as
I click where I want to go) and stays good untill idle again. It use to work
fine.

It's not the ISP (Bellsouth DSL) because I've just had a friends laptop with
XP Pro over here and it runs perfectly using my ISP modem. It must be a
registry setting and config somewhere and I need HELP??

I have 2 gig P4 with 1 gig ram and tons of drive space on 2 drives.

I've tried to create a new user profile and that didn't fix the problem.
It's very annoying to say the least.

Any ideas.....??

Did you recently enable automatic updates after not running windows update
or having automatic updates enabled for a long period of time? When was
the last time you checked for viruses? Have you made any recent changes?
Any suggestions on how to re-create the problem? Good answers require
smart questions, please see

Does your friend run a secure system or is it a malware breeding ground that
may have spread while it was on your network?

What research have you done to come to that conclusion? Please see

Don't Easter-egg for answers aimlessly, always make a best-effort to take a
reasonably educated guess. Please see http://wiki.ursine.ca/Easter_egging

Perhaps the PC is powering off the connection with Power management.
Open Device manager, and then the NIC or USB (whichever the connection
is) and Properties, and the Power management tab, and UNcheck "Allow the
computer to turn off this device........"

Well, I thought that you had the answer but ny testing just wasn't idle long
enough. It's back to the drawing board.

Sorry!!!

You say 20-30 seconds for it to access the DSL link? Can you try
Disable/Enable in Device manger and see whether that causes an immediate
response. Also is I.E. open the whole time or closed and opened? Try that.

Please do not post in backwards order as it makes posts harder to read.

I've alwas had Auto-Updates turned on ?? Is this a problem?

No, you should have those turned on.
Let's say that that I'll assume it must be a registry setting and config
somewhere because (since last night) I installed another copy of XP into a
different drive and it doesn't lag after I let it sit idle..........
SOOOoo, it must be a registry setting and config somewhere Paul.

No, registry settings and configs would not cause this on it's own, that's
still a stab in the dark.
You just ask me about auto-updates, that would be a config settings.

Auto updates have configuration settings but aren't settings themselves,
settings require software to read and deal with them. Software you don't
know about might be the cause. Have you done any research into what is
using the connection using the tools available in Windows, such as netstat?

Again, resarch required. Please read ESR's article about how to ask
detailed (aka smart) questions and start again.

Yes, when you are going to use it again try the disable/enable NIC and
see if the response time changes. Also is there anything set in Control
Panel, Power Options at the "10 minute" setting.

B

Bob I

No, just disable/enable the NIC after the 10 minute rest period, no
reboot necessary. Only trying to see if it is NIC related or operating
system is doing something else. Another place to check would be to leave
Task Manager running with the "Processes" tab up and invert sort on CPU,
to see what is happening.

Really baffling. At a command prompt try ping www.google.com and see if
there is an immediate response in the time that the link would appear
dead. (you may end up running a "keep alive ping" to fix this issue)

B

Bob I

I'm not familiar with what all the DSL install put there so I can't
recommend anything on that point. (you could compare with the other
computer if you wish). But is a ping successful in that "20-30 second"
time frame?

Ok,
When it starts the lag, I minimus the non-loading IE6 window and open the
bat file that pings ww.google.com and presto --- the web page loads.

What does that tell me...??

B

Bob I

I suspect it's not a hardware issue then. Are you using a third party
firewall? Or if you click on the link for the page again, does that
cause an immediate response?

G

Clicking on the link again and again doesn't help.

Firewall;
for the last year, i've been using the (paid for) version of AVG 7.5 with
firewall. I have the XP Pro firewall turned off.

Did the Lag issue start at or about the time you installed the 3rd party
firewall, or an update to that firewall?
