Hi all. I have a project which require my PCs to download files from a file
server within a gigabit lan. All my PCs are installed with gigabit nic.
However there is 1 pc whose transfer rate is significantly faster than the
rest. About 5 or 6 times faster. I have checked and all the lan connections
on the PCs are set to auto detect. Event viewer did not report any error. I
did a netstat -nao and found that the PCs which have much slower data
transfer rate has a very much higher number of close_wait between itself and
the fileserver compare to the pc whose data transfer rate is fine. Is there
any other possibility that i can check? Thks in advance.

It would help to know what speed that they "auto-detected". In the
network control panel, on each machine, right-click on your NIC and
select "Status" and see what the "Speed" reports.

It might be a cabling problem. Gigabit requires all 8 wires in the
cable whereas 10/100-Base-T only needs 4 wires. Many cables have been
manufactured with only 4 wires to save money.

John
