Network failure

Ok, this is driving me nuts:

Have two machines (both PIII). Have SMC Barricade
7004ABR Hub. These have been networked for quite a
while (over a year) and worked fine. I decided to
format both HDD and now the network is down. Here's what
I got:

Big machine :WInXP Pro, workgroup "HOME NETWORK". This
machine can see itself and the other machine on the
network. It can only access its own files.

Little machine: Win2K, workgroup "HOME NETWORK". This
machine can only see itself on the network, it cannot see
the big machine at all. I have removed and reinstalled
the TCP/IP and NetBEUI protocols. No fix.

Both machines can access the internet, and router setup
screens. I have tried cables, NICs, reinstalling OSs...
I'm at a loss. I believe the problem is with the Win2K
box, but I am uncertain. Can anyone steering me in the
proper direction?

Thanks

I believe your workgroup name " HOME NETWORK" is going to be a problem.

try home_network or home-network

Just to clarify from this site http://www.duxcw.com/faq/network/names.htm

workgroup names can not contain spaces...

Ok, I've tried "HOME_NETWORK" ... no fix.
.
Some other items I forgot to included: the WinXP machine
has the following installed/reinstalled NWLink NetBIOS,
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocal,
TCP/IP... not sure if that helps or not.

remove everything but tcp/ip unless you connect to some type of novell
network. tcp/ip is all you need for a peer to peer network

Ok, I've removed everything from both machines... reboot
Reinstalled on both Client, File Share, TCP/IP... reboot
Setup new names Comp1 = Earth, Comp2 = Mars, Work group =
Terran... reboot

Earth (originally the big computer) can see both Earth
and Mars. Can only access Earth.

Mars, now cannot log onto Terran network at all. All
permisions & shares have been set on this one.

I'm getting ready to give up.

did u check event viewer on both for errors?
disable the master browser on one of them.
then create a user account with a common name and same passowrd on both
logon with that and see if it works.
www.pctechnicians.ca
w2k tips
for instructions on disabling master browser.
