Network doesn't like laptop

Hi,

Just back from work site, and now my laptop won't play
with my home network (has worked fine for years). All
runXP pro. I can ping to and from laptop, but not view
other shares or access printer on other computer. I can
get out through router to
internet from laptop.

I have checked all the settings, personal firewall not
enabled on any machine. I have renamed laptop, renamed
workgroup, uninstalled Client and TCP/IP and reinstalled,
no luck. Reloaded XP (upgrade route), but
trying to get out of or to lap top, or even to view
workgroup computers from laptop fails, sez perhaps i
don't have authorization!

Any thoughts? thanx

Can you connect to the PC if you use the ip address and
not the name. IE: \\192.168.1.5\share If you can do
that it is a netbios issue. Make sure it is enabled on
all your PCs. It is located in Network Properties --
Advanced-->WINS. It should be set to enable. If that
doesn't work you might not have the correct permissions
to access data on the other machines.

Thanks! i can mount the drive using its IP address, but
still not its name.

I've tried to find where to enable WINS, but haven't. My
access in XP SR1a, is, via say Control Panel, to Network
Connections/ Network Properties / but Advanced offers
only to enable/disable the firewall, nothing about WINS.
None of the other tabs do either. i've checked to see if
i could add a new client/service on the General tab, but
Netbios/netbui are not options....

Any other thoughts? thanx,
