Network change server from ME to XP Home

We had a working network with a Windows ME machine as the server and 2
workstations running Windows 98. We replaced the Windows ME machine with a
newer machine running Windows XP Home and now one of the workstations will
not connect to the network while the other one will although the mapping
(needed by one of the progams) takes a bit longer to make the connection - it
says it is not connected on power up but then is available a few minutes
later. Both workstations are older (circa 2001) laptops connected by cable
through a hub?

'Server' is most definitely a misnomer here.

Are you sharing files off the Windows XP Home machine?
You do realize that the number of concurrent connections to the Windows XP
Home machine is 5?
(Windows XP Professional has a limit of 10.)

You say 'will not connect to the network'... What do you mean by that?
Is the Windows XP machine handing out the DHCP addresses?
Or did you mean to say that when the Windows 98 machine comes up - it
doesn't see the shared directory on the Windows XP Home machine?

Thanks for the reply. I guess I meant "it doesn't see the shared directory
on the Windows XP Home machine?". I have it mapped to the XP home machine and
it says the mapping is not available and only shows itself in Network
Neighborhood and does not show on the XP Home machine in My Network Places.
There are only the 3 machines to connect.
