network card not visible

Hi,

A few weeks ago, I posted this problem in alt.os.windows.xp , but I still
don't have a solution.

Last month someone brought his computer to me to install some software on
it.
I did it many times, linking a second pc to my second network card, but this
time there's a strange problem:
The network card is not seen by XP on that second computer.
So I told the guy 'your network card doesn't work, but untill this morning
he used his network card linked to his cablemodem, and had never any trouble
with it... (providor Telenet Belgium), and still has not.
We opened the pc and the card is still fitted tight in the wright place.
In the list of network connections, there is only the 1394 firewire and a
broken connection of an modem that maybe once was there but now has been
removed.
When I type ipconfig at the dos prompt, I can see one lan-connection (ip
0.0.0.0), so the card is seen this way, so why isn't the card in the list of
hardware then?
SP2 was installed a few weeks time ago.

First I've put the net card out - no effect
Then I've put the net card in another adaptor - no effect
Then I added a new net card - no effect: the OS doesn't even see I've added
a second net card, it's not appearing in device manager neither.
It didn't see one change I made.
So maybe plug and play isn't working anymore ...

I've read this : http://www.petri.co.il/configure_tcp_ip_from_cmd.htm

A few hours later:
Well, I did succeed giving it a static ip now, and I have connection
between his and my pc.
'netsh interface ip set address name="......." static 192.168.1.3
255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 1' did the trick
Now I'll try to change those weared adapter names back into "local area
connection" or something like that.

For the moment it's name is one hell of a long string of characters !!!
Maybe that's why the adaptor does never show up in the network-connections
list?

So, the only way accessing any network cards in this computer is using netsh
in a dos box.

How could I get them back accesible in Windows XP? Anyone can help?

Also note that there's a new virus around that has symptoms like this.
Check both machines with updated antivirus.

What virus would that be?
There WAS a virus (don't know witch, I didn't remove it myself).
So maybe the virus is gone, but the damage still must be repaired.
