Network cable unplugged

I am trying to create a home network between two computers running XP-Home.
Both have 10/100 Ethernet cards that I have connected. When I run Network
Wizard it finds the card but says the network is unplugged. Why do I keep
getting the unplugged message when I know it IS plugged in?

Thanks
Don

Are you using an ordinary cable to connect the Ethernet ports? To connect
directly this way it has to be a crossover cable, otherwise you are
connecting out to out and in to in, it should of course be out to in and in
to out. If you need a crossover this can be done by either replacing the
cable or by using an adapter plug at one end.
