Network Browsing Problem

M

mcp6453

Machine2 is Windows 2000. Machine1 is XP SP2 with the firewall disabled.
Both machines are on the same subnet.

When admin1 is logged into Machine2, she can browse the Windows Network
and see Machine1, along with its shared printers and folders.

When admin2 is logged into Machine2, Machine1 does not show up anywhere
in browsing, even after a long wait. She can reach Machine1 with Start |
Run "\\Machine1", but she cannot browse there.

The reason that this is a problem is that there is an application that
admin2 needs to run that needs to access a folder on Machine1. The
application does not allow typing in the UNC path.

I just did a temporary work around by mapping a drive letter on Machine2
to Machine1. (I was able to access the folder by typing in the UNC.)
Even then, though, Machine1 still does not show up in Computers Near Me
or Network Neighborhood.

Hi,
You need to check that the Folder on Machine 1 is shareable with the
machine2 full access and assign shares & Security for machine 2 on machine1
and vice versa,be sure your connection is correct and your settings are
matchin on both machine as this can make it difficult for you to connect to
other machines, and are you using Direct cable connection or through a
hub/switch or cross over cable, check the Sharing File and printer on both
machine are set Okay, there is a lot you cn say but it depend on what your
setting is.
Good luck

Thanks, Nass, but...

1. Permissions for the folder are Everyone.
2. Machine2 can see Machine1 when admin1 is logged in, but not admin2.
3. Both machines are on the same subnet behind a router.
4. Machine2 is able to map a drive to Machine1 when admin2 is logged in.

Hi,
Try to assign Admin2 permissions on machine1 File/Folders Charing, and try to
be sure that Admin2 have the right to logo on Machine2 as Administrator, then
try to check the subnet mask for each computer,go to the Command prompt and
type- cmd-enter- ipconfig/all-press Enter, and compare the result on both
machine, look for the McAfee Side and try to allow machine2 have full
access, check the Firewall Internet Application, you may block the
Workgroup, but I can't see it as a problem since you said you Disable the
Firewall, On XP open My Network Places and Right click the Network connection
and select on the Opening Window Repair my Connection and see.
hope this helps
Please report back

Please re-read my original post. None of this information is relevant to
my situation. The permissions on Machine1 are Everyone with full
permission with the Guest account enabled. Moreover, if any of what you
are saying below were an issue, admin1 would not be able to browse to
Machine1.

Thanks, anyway.

Hi MCP,
Sorry About the confusion,But I realy don't know what the Network you trying
to troubleshoot *Status is* in the case of the Application what you want to
run,if every thing else work and shareable, then this application which you
want to run is the trouble,if n't your Network Missing something in the
process of setting them up,you can presume that you done every thing right
then you revise the setting you find something very simple cause you
trouble, well I hope somebody will come with a solution, meanwhile I will do my
search and look to some Scenarios I encounter may I will find the answer.
