Netscape, Mozilla and Opera

Jack Gillis

I know this isn't directly related to XP so I ask forgiveness if it is
too far off topic

A recent article on CNN.com recommends using Mazola or Opera for a
browser rather than I.E. -- No mention of Netscape as I recall.

How does Netscape differ from Mazola? I thought they were one in the
same at one time but what do I know?

Does anyone here have experience with Mozilla or Opera? What are your
thoughts on them?

Thank you.

Whoops! I was blindly letting by spell checker do its thing and I know
better. Read Mozilla for Mazola below. Corny, No?

Jack,

Mozilla is the cleanest and the most efficient thing you can get.
Netscape is almost the same thing, but has a lot of annoying and unnecessary extras (including something from AOL(!)).
Firefox is probably nice, but am waiting for the final (fully tested) release.
Opera is COOL, has many customization/configuration options. It's like Maybach 62 :) But many of us simply don't need all this overhead.

Hope this helps.

Mazola is much greasier. ;-)

Sorry, I have next to no experience with either and really can't
help.

Mozilla is great. I have been using Mozilla for a long time. I did not
start primarily using Mozilla until 1.01.

I suggest Ken Blake should explore outside of a Microsoft shell world to
see that there are good alternatives available.

Thank for for the suggestion. I'm sure that there *are* good
altenatives available, but I'm not interested in exploring other
products when I'm happy with what I use. As far as I'm concerned,
it has nothing to do with being "outside of a Microsoft world."
Like most people, I tend to continue to use an application if
I've been using it for a while and it works well for me, whether
or not there are good alternatives available. I simply don't have
the time to even begin to explore all the alternatives.

For example, I use Quicken (*not* a Microsoft product) because it
meets my needs; and that's even though I hear from many others
that Microsoft Money is a good alternative. And I use WordPerfect
(again *not* a Microsoft product) because it meets my needs; and
that's even though I hear from many others that Microsoft Word is
a good alternative.

And so on.

Mozilla may be great, Linux may be great, Money may be great,
Word may be great, the Macintosh may be great, and many other
products I don't use may be great. But I'll stick with what I
know and like until or unless a compelling reason arises for me
to change.

Yes, updates require IE.

| Thanks, you are right.
|
| I seems I remember that MS restricts some of their sites to IE users. I
| hope that doesn't apply to the updates.

Yes, updates require IE.

That's Microsoft's way of trying to force you to keep using IE.
They don't care that the main conduit for malware is when users
open up IE in preparation to using Windows Update. In order to run
Windows Update, Microsoft has it rigged so that Active X,
JavaScript and a bunch of other crap has to be running in their
browser. Otherwise, update won't work. Trouble is, when you turn
on all this useless and dangerous crap, you become a virus magnet.
Do yourself a favor, forget about Windows Update. Download the
security updates yourself, and install them manually.

Mozilla is the successor to Netscape, reborn. And there is a next
variant - Firefox - in the late stages of development that is getting
a lot of attention, and approval. see ww.mozilla.org

I have Netscape but don't use it. Have Opera as main browser, but find
I sometimes have to fall back on IE where there are 'active X' things in
use - as some of the microsoft pages. I think the thing to do is get
trial downloads and see how you like them. When installing do *not*
have them make themselves the default browser (wait for that until you
have made your pick) and be sure to have a Restore point prior to the
install, so that if you uninstall you could then go back there to ensure
you remove all traces

I have been using the registered version of Opera as my main browser
nearly three years now, and am very happy with it. Like Alex, I only use
IE when absolutely necessary, like for Windows Update. Another good thing
about the "alternative" browsers like Opera, Mozilla, Firefox, and
Netscape, they aren't prone to browser hijackings or pop-up ads.
