Netgear USB wireless adapter

V

Virgo

My son has connected a Lynksys router to my computer. It has all worked
well, until he blew his power supply, and also got a new operating system.
This power supply blew his adapter board so he purchased a wireless USB
adapter. Still cannot get on the internet. We called our ISP and they said
it was not a problem on their end. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks much.

The ISP is right! They are not the ones who provide the wireless
Linksys router. Your son need to re-establish the wireless link
between the Linksys router and his new USB adapter. From your
computer, get your son to access the routers internal web page (ex:
http://192.168.1.1) and re-configure the wiresless section, including
the WEP/WAP security.

Type the URL given below, in his browser's address bar [IE, Mozilla or

He has no browser because he cannot access the internet. I tried to access it from my computer by typing in the ip address ( is this the URL you are talking about?) and they want a password. He of course does not remember it. Any way to get around this?

Sorry I didn't just type out the address, which is 192.168.1.1; which
must be done in his browser on his computer. The connection between his
router and his pc is what matters to read this page. Try it... and if
he gets a log in box... try leaving the user name *blank* and type
"admin" for his password. That should display the settings you need to
know/change.

Is his ISP cable or DSL? That will make a difference in his settings.

The link that Nass gave you will probably answer a lot of your
questions. As s/he said, return if you can't work it out. :)

OOPS... I just noticed in re-reading your original message... that the
router is attached to YOUR computer, so YOU should be able to access the
router's internal page following the above instructions. Hope I haven't
confused you too much. I'm really sorry...

HELP!
Someone who knows more about Netgear adapters and networking is going to
have to help you, and it will help them if you post the exact product
descriptions of what you're using [i.e. Linksys router WRT54G - or
whatever, and the same with the Netgear adapter]. Also it might help to
specify clearly your connections, wired or wireless, etc., separately
for each machine.

Sorry I have just muddied the water... :) If you have a direct
connection through your cable modem, I would try the NetGear online
support and Linksys online support at their web sites also.

This is our configuration. His router (lynksys WRT54G) is connected to my
computer, which is connected to a cable modem ( Motorola Surfboard). He did
have a wireless adapter board with antenna in his computer. His power supply
blew the board, (we think) so he got a new Netgear 54 Mbps wireless USB
adapter to replace the adapter board. The guy at best buy said just plug it
into the back of his computer and it would work fine. I cannot disconnect
the modem, because that is where the internet connection comes in. Maybe I
am in over my head, and will call the cable co., or perhaps I will call
someone at Best Buy for assistance. I got onto the website of the router,
and did not see any WEP settings. I am confused.

Hi Virgo,
Let me recap on this, he blow up his computer and got a USB Wireless and
you
mentioned in your last message he connected by a cable modem?.
So what kind of connection he want to establish, wired or wireless?.
This a drew according to your last message

Router <----------- Your Computer
^

His Computer ( wireless/Wired).
No he need to detach the cable Modem and Use the Utility came with USB to
establish a connection, and he need the Encryption Key (either WPA,WEP)
and
know the name of the connection say *VirgoNetwork* and enter the
Encryption
Key and he will be able to establish connection.
The link I provided earlier will help if you both go through it and make a
note like step 1, step 2, step 3, step4 connection.
P.S if you need to get to the router, through your Browser first, but if

I did it. I'm not quite sure how, but I followed some of your steps and
then put the router cd into my computer, and typed in a bunch of dns #'s
etc, and his computer finally said "you are connected to the internet". Then
I came back to my computer and could not get on. So, I called the cable co.
and they rebooted the modem and router, and now we are both up. Thank you
Nass. You were very, very helpful. Now any idea on how to stop auto scroll
on Internet Explorer 7.0?
Thanks again.
