<SNIP>

OK, I have the following: the 8 steps above, cdiag output from laptop -
stalled at the enumeration step,
Other items I have tried and the results from them, and cdiag output from
desktop.

For each of these 4 host personalities, x:
main - ping no response, net view error 53
192.168.1.100 - ping OK, net view error 53
t30 - ping OK - net view "The server service is not started"
192.168.1.101 - ping OK, net view error 53

<SNIP>

OK, John,

That's a great start. I think I see where you HAVE to start:
The Server service is not started.

Is it OK to start it? (Y/N) [Y]:

Get the Server started on T30. This is essential. The Browser service, and so
many more concepts like file sharing, depend upon this.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Components>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Components

Having done that, let's start over with fresh browstat and ipconfig from each
computer.

OK, I have done the following:

From your URL, I tried the following:
"Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", is listed in Local Area Connection - Properties
"NetBIOS Over TCP/IP" Enabled, it is enabled in TCP/IP Properties - Advanced
- WINS, but shows up as disabled in ipconfig/all.
"TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" was disabled, but now is - Started and Automatic.
"Internet Connection Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" was
disabled, but now is - Started and Automatic.
"Client for Microsoft Networks", is listed in Local Area Connection -
Properties
"Workstation" service is running - Started and Automatic.
"File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks", is listed in Local Area
Connection - Properties
"Server" was disabled, but now is - Started and Automatic.

Restarted computer

main - no response, net view error 53
192.168.1.100 - ping OK, net view error 53
t30 - ping OK - net view "There are no entries in the list"
192.168.1.101 - ping OK, net view error 53

I have also included the following:
Browstat status, ipconfig/all for both desktop and laptop, and cdiag from
laptop - it ran this time!

OK, John. That's a great start.

Next, verify for me your LAN topology. You have a NAT router, servicing 2
computers. You are using NetBIOS Over TCP (NBT) for file sharing. Right so
far?

Is NBT explicitly Enabled on both computers? Are you using IPX/SPX
intentionally? See this article for discussion on both questions:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Components>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Components

And John, we have a bit more work to do. So do us both a favour, and reply
after my replies please.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/how-to-post-on-usenet-and-encourage.html#TopPosting

Topology is correct; Linksys NAT Router connected to cable internet modem,
each computer, and a Simpletech network hard drive. I belive that both
computers should be using NetBIOS Over TCP (NBT) for file sharing.

NetBios is enabled on both computers, (ipconfig/all shows it disabled on the
laptop)
IPX/SPX is not selected in LAN connection properties

As a side excercise, is enabled IPX/SPX on both computers to see what would
happen, and was able to see and connect to the desktop from the laptop , but
could not see, or connect o the laptop from the desktop.. ??!!

By the way, is this posting correct?

You got the posting down pat. And it looks like I have your topology right.

So now we look at the details.

Having IPX/SPX installed is one of your problems. Look at Browstat on T30 -
Status for domain GREGORY on transport \Device\NwlnkNb
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.
No mention of transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_..., as you find for Main. And
that's your second problem. Whether or not it's explicitly Enabled, it's not
active.

And here's your third visible problem:
Status for domain GREGORY on transport \Device\NwlnkIpx
Unable to retrieve server list from MAIN: 1231

A 1231 error, per net helpmsg, is:
The network location cannot be reached. For information about network
troubleshooting, see Windows Help.

Both computers are using IPX/SPX for their networking, whether or not IPX/SPX is
or isn't selected. If IPX/SPX is not selected, that explains the 1231.

My recommendations:
# Un install IPX/SPX.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html
# Repeat the LSP / Winsock repair process.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html
I uninstalled IPX/SPX, and did the LSP/Winsock repairs.

Now I have a new problem..... when I go to the LAN properties, I am not able
to select the "Client for Microsoft Networks" or the "File and Printer
sharing". When I try to check the boxes for these, I get a dialog box that
says "Your current selection will also disable the following components:
Client for Microsoft Networks" (same for file and printers) It is almost as
if the check box is working backwards.

OK, John.

Now you're going to have to un install the NIC adapter, from Device Manager.
After you restart the system, Windows should automatically detect the NIC and
reload the drivers. Then rerun the Network Setup Wizard, and restart yet again.

That NIC was a persistant thing to remove, I wound up having to remove each
protocol, delete the LAN connections, both the wireless and the ethernet
adapters, and reboot - all of these steps five times to finally get it out!

But it finally reinstalled with the correct components and now works!!!

The funny thing is that I was about to give up with no new results, and
decided to try one more time - same method, but this time it worked. No idea
what I did different, but this time it stuck.

Thank you so much for your help with this.
