Hi JM,
In Windows2000 (and XP) NetBIOS is enabled by default if TCPIP is
installed. In XP you have the option listed to Disable/Enable NetBIOS, but
in Windows2000 the option is not in the GUI to disable it.
The advice about adding NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compat... is not correct.
That protocol is not NetBIOS over TCP/IP - that is the IPX/SPX protocol.
If the RAS/RRAS server is configured to use a WINS server on it's NIC
(internal NIC if it's a VPN server), then the client will inherit the WINS
setting automatically. So if the RAS/RRAS server is configured correctly,
the client shouldn't have to do anything with the RAS/VPN connectoid.
And for the other statement:
WINS and NetBIOS are not effectively oboslete with Win2k and later. It is
needed for Network Neighborhood browsing (which many applications that
still heavily used rely on - backup software, etc) and is still used as a
name resolution method for clients accessing other machines. I would
rephrase to state that DNS is playing a much more important role now.
Thanks,
Boyd Benson
