NetBIOS and Windows 2000 AD

How important is it to continue to install NetBIOS on the client
workstations in a Windows 2000 Active Directory network with Windows XP Pro
systems? When we started to replace systems with Win XP ones we haven't
been installing the NetBIOS protocol since it usually is not installed by
default. However see that you can not use the feature to restrict certain
user accounts from logging onto certain computers unless you have NetBIOS
protocol installed.

Hi Brent-
In W2K, 2K3, XP these systems no longer use NetBios for its primary name
resolution instead they've moved to the internet standard of DNS as primary.
If you have a solid DNS infrastructure implemented (which you must for AD to
function) then you don't need netbios unless you have legacy clients, apps,
or services that require it. User authentication in AD is done through
Kerberos over UDP (part of TCP\IP protocol).
