Netbeui vs File and Printer Sharing

Can I use NetBEUI rather than the File and Printer Sharing service, to
get file sharing in the same way that File and Printer Sharing service
offers it?

I'm running an internal LAN connected to a router going out the
Internet. I'm told that the File and Printer Sharing service (LAN
connection properties) causes security problems and its been suggested
that NetBEUI is an alternative that will allow file sharing (we don't
need printer sharing) in the same way as with the File and Printer
Sharing Service. Is this true? Are there drawbacks to using NetBEUI?
or advantages?

No. NetBEUI is a protocol like TCP/IP or IPX; it is not a substitute for
the Server service. Computers must have a common protocol in order to
communicate; however, if you do not enable File and Printer Sharing, the
computer cannot share its resources. The conventional way to prevent file
sharing on an Internet connection is to use a firewall. Most routers
provide such a firewall.
