NetBEUI unavailable for Network Print Port

Andrew

I have a LAN connecting an XP PC and two 98SE PCs, and a
printer which is networked as its own print port (that is,
it isn't attached to any one computer, but attaches
directly to the network). The two 98SE PCs print just
fine, but the XP PC (which is new and just getting
integrated into the network) doesn't seem to see it. I've
followed the directions at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;282842, which needed to be modified slightly; instead
of choosing a Local Port in step 4, I choose a Network
Print Port, which is how it's set up in the two 98SE PCs.
When I try to add the Print Port, though, I'm presented
with a dialogue box with three tabs: IPX, TCP/IP, and
NetBEUI. IPX and NetBEUI are both crossed off with a red
X, even though I've installed NetBEUI properly on the LAN
(as describe at the Microsoft Knowledge Base).

Any thoughts on how to proceed? MUCH obliged for any
assistance, thanks in advance!!!

All of the 98SE PCs use NetBEUI for the printer protocol,
though. We don't use TCP/IP for printing... If there's
some info I could provide that would help, let me know and
I'll post it...

Thanks,
Andrew

Windows XP has removed the NetBEUI protocol from the network stack.
For those that still use NetBEUI (like me) because it is more secure
than TCP/IP (it is non-routable over WAN) you can manually install it.
Its easy.

** Installing NetBEUI in Windows XP **

Within the Windows XP CD, locate the folder
"VALUEADD\MSFT\NET\NETBEUI"

In there you will find 3 files (NBF.SYS, NETBEUI.TXT, NETNBF.INF)

* copy nbf.sys into the %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ directory
* copy netnbf.inf into the %SYSTEMROOT%\INF\ directory
* open network connection properties and use "Install..." button to
add NetBEUI protocol

Also, don't forget to unbind the shares from TCP/IP in the "Advanced"
option. Only NetBEUI should be checked in your shares.
