.net install failing

The .net version 1.1 update from Windows Update has failed a couple times.

I also tried the redistibutable package from MS's download center - it
failed with 4 errors, each with a long alpha-numeric character string. The
first two are
7D4B5591-4C80-42BB-B0E5-F2C0CEE02CIA
9922FCCE-8CAF-4A22-AA39-DA835B6C6084

There is a Windows.net folder in the Windows folder. It's got about 40MB in
it.

I'm running WinXP, SP2 on an AMD 64 bit CPU. The install was done from a CD
with SP2 slipstreamed into a SP1a 'base'.
No issues in Device Manager. No error events in Event Viewer [System]

Any help appreciated.
