Net framework critical updates

Went to windows update site today 2 critical updates were
needed, .Net framework 1.0 SP3 and .Net framework 1.1
SP1. Downloaded fine but install hung. I had to re-boot.
Downloaded the separately from Microsoft download site
but same problem when I tried to install. Since
installing XP SP2 I have had problems with installing
microsoft updates/ software and also sysytem restore
isn't creating restore points, hangs and also requires a
re-boot. Otherwise SP2 is trouble-free. Any help would be
most appreciated.

SP2 should have installed an new version of window
installer, version 3.0. Search for msiexec.exe in
windows/system32 dir and check it's version number.

If not correct version go to Microsoft main page select
the downloads area and look for windows installer version
3.0 and install it if possible.

Same here.
I have no less than 5 different machines in different
locations which have essentially the same problem:
SP2 and all other updates EXCEPT .NET 1.1 Service Pack 1
have been downloaded and installed.
However, each time I try to install the .NET 1.1 Service
Pack 1 (it downloaded just fine and is apparently
residing on my hard drive) it always fails with an error
code of 643.
I have tried everything listed in KB Article 822798 which
purportedly deals with this issue, but nothing has helped.
Somebody, somewhere out there has got to know why this is
happening, so let 'er rip!
Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem (error 643, etc.). I think this is what I
did to get it to install - it did finally install.

I first removed 1.1 using Add/Remove Programs. Then did a normal Windows
update procedure. Windows update reinstalled 1.1. I ran an update again
and SP1 was installed. I seem to remember that the 1.0 problem went away.
I'd appreciate it if you would let me know if this works because I need to
do the same thing on my daughter's computer. Mine is okay now.

One other comment - only try this at your own risk. I'm not an MVP or any
other kind of computer expert. This worked for me. Wouldn't want you to
mess up your computer.

I had this exact same problem. since i like a 'clen' system and installs,
tried various times and changes. Following steps fixed problem.
1)Finally, via control panel, removed anything/everying that had .net in
description. powered machine off, just to make sure.

2) came up, ran windows update. found .net 1.1 framework,, installed

3) ran windows update again,, found .net sp1, installed.. powered off again,
just to be sure.

problem fixed... hope this may help someone/anyone,,, thnx,, majora
