What is the program you are trying to install. I don't think it was
designed for Vista or possibly even XP becuase XP ships with .net 2.0
and Vista ships with .net 3.0. The program should still work though,
becuase of backwards compatibility, but it might be a little too old.
More info on the program would be helpful.

It is a program for my Pocket PC - Smart Mahjong - the installer needs .NET
Framework 1.1.4322 on my PC in order to install it.

No, it didn't.

The first OS to actually ship with .NET was
Windows Server 2003, .NET 1.1.

The OS XP Pro Service Pack 1 shipped Net 1.1

[debate about what flavor, if any, of .NET Framework shipped with Windows
XP]

Um...are you referring to a Microsoft distribution, or an OEM customized
version? And in your experience is the .NET kit actually installed?

I'm asking since the Microsoft distribution of XPSP1 did include .NET 1.1 --
but nothing in the Microsoft installation process for the Service Pack
installed .NET on the user's machine. It amounted to a convenient way for
MS to distribute the .NET setup kit to the masses, but if someone needed it
they would have to go to the \DOTNETFX folder and run the setup program
themselves.

OTOH, there wasn't any reason why an OEM vendor might not install it through
its own installation process for SP2; some of the trialware and other
obnoxious advertising junk that infests OEM-build machines might require the
presence of .NET.

Actually, Windows XP SP1 came with the .NET Framework 1.1

That is correct. However Windows XP by itself did not.

I still have the OS disk, and use it. Microsoft DID include it on an
operating system disk (XP PRO including SP1)

ance again thanks. They brought out XP, then after they released SP1, they
included SP1 on the XP OS disk, the same as they eventually included SP2 on
XP OS disks. Hard to get through to some of these experts from Microsoft.!!!!!

Okay, Mick.

But, this is what you originally said:

"XP shipped with Net 1.0"

Problem solved! Even though the Net 1.0 folder exists in Vista and there are
files in there it is not the COMPLETE 1.0 install. It has to be installed
again!
