Net connection from two computers in the same Lan

Trish

Hi All,

I can connect to internet from two computers in the Lan. Both the internet
connections are dial-up connections and so there is not much speed. How can
I mix http connections from both the computers? Is there any software
available to do it? Google search did not help.

Thanks for any replies and help.

Get broadband and buy a router like everyone else.

There is a way to use two modems to effectively double transfer speeds..
BUT.

The BUT is that this requires TWO modems that support this scheme, and
always requires TWO physically separate telephone lines AND your ISP must
support it.

Both modems are connected to one system, and the connection is shared from
that system. If the modems are on different systems it doesn't work.

Supra called this arrangement "shotgun" at one time. It's more commonly
known as multi-link. It's not in common use anymore because modems have
been largely supplanted by broadband.

Here's the MS KB article on it:

There is no way to do this in software alone. You have to have the two
lines and two modems and the ISP has to support it, and so for the price, if
it's available in your area just get a broadband connection and a router.
You'll be much better off.

The object of this is normally to increase transfer speeds, and the setup is
called multi-link.

... except that it isn't normally used anymore due to the rise of broadband,
but that's not available everywhere.

Thanks for the replies. I do not have a modem or net connection in my
computer. In fact, I am getting net access through another computer/s on
the Lan. There is proxy softwares installed in those computers to provide
net access to me.

Right now I can use only one net connection at a time. I wish to use both at
the same time to increase speed. Any softwares available to help this?

And those get their net access via dial-up?

Doesn't work that way. If the net traffic is coming to you over an
ethernet (or 10-base-2, for that matter) cable, the limit is the signal
source, and you can't make two copies of it to speed it up. You need a
faster signal source, a faster connection. If it's dial-up, you would use
multilink, with two modems on one machine, and two phone lines, and an ISP
that supports it.

The hardware has to be configured to work together towards this. Software
alone cannot do this.

Trish

No.

As stated, if those systems use dial-up to get their net access, that's
where the multi-link has to happen if there is to be any speed increase.
And they will need two modems on one machine, two separate phone lines and
an ISP that supports multilink to make it work.

Once the connection is made, there is no way for you to speed it up, in
software or hardware. You just need a faster connection.

In some areas, that is very expensive, too expensive to be a reasonable
alternative.

But "Expensive" is not the same as "unavailable", and "reasonable
alternative" is determined solely by each user.
