.Net Compact

Hello .Net guys:

I was wondering, what is the ".Net Compact", and what would the "compact"
mean. First I though that it refer to .Net for Windows mobile, then someone
told me that it's a portable framework that can attach to your application.
Now, I know that I can simply, just go to the MSDN and search for it, but I
want to know what do the people know about this before going to the MSDN.
Because I do see it so popular among the .Net programmers.

Thanks in advance

in general, your first inclination is correct. .NET Compact is for Windows
Mobile. That is the general use for it.

Is it possible to use elsewhere? Anything is possible, but it would not be
my first inclination to try, except maybe to prove I was kewl. ;-)

The "portable stuff" is wrong but FYI you also have a "client profile"
that is intended for use on client machine (for example you don't have
ASP.NET). For now it is limited (only works if you don't have any
other version installed). It will be better from what I have seen in
.NET 4 (my understanding is that this previous limitation will be gone
as we'll start fresh perhaps with even a new CLR).

..NET 4.0 will change a lot of things, based on my playing around with
the CTP and now the beta.
