I'm really having two issues that I would greatly
appreciate your help with. First, a little background. I
HAD a Netgear wireless router, and wireless USB adapter
that I use at home to connect to the T1 connection that
comes into my building that everyone shares. I
established connection with my office's VPN, and worked
remotely using my home desktop (home computer connected
to work computer, working from home). Now I want to set
up a VPN and connect to my HOME computer from other
locations (with my laptop while away from home, from
work, etc). I bought a better, faster (108mbps 802.11G
router - Netgear), and also bought XP Pro because I was
under the impression that with XP Pro this would be
simple. I tried setting up my own VPN through the New
Connection Wizard, and when I get to the step that
says "Accept incoming connections" or whatever, it
freezes up, errors out and gives me the following
message:
"Incoming Connections depend on the Routing and Remote
Access service which was unable to start. For more
information, check the system event log.
That's my first problem. Netgear says I need a special
router, or special 3rd party software. I was under the
impression that with XP Pro, XP Pro acts as the 3rd party
software. So now, not only am I not able to create my own
VPN to allow remote access to this computer, but now the
old connection that I used to connect to my work's VPN no
longer works. I click on the shortcut that worked up
until I tried setting up my own VPN, and nothing happens.
It's like that connection doesn't even exist anymore. So
I tried setting up a new connection, again with the New
Connection Wizard. I select "Connect to the netword at my
workplace" button, click next, and both options are
grayed-out. Ideally the radio button that says "Virtual
Private Network connection" would be enabled, so that I
could select it and move forward, but it's disabled and
I'm unable to click on either of the two options.
Therefore when I click "Next" nothing happens. What is
going on here? Do you have any suggestions for setting up
my own VPN as well? I was given some port #s to "open" by
Netgear if I come up with the 3rd party software...or
whatever. PLEASE HELP!! I REALLY need to be able to
connect to my work VPN, it's crucial!!!
