Need to upgrade my system memory to 512 MB

I'm new at this and don't know where to start and really need some help. I'm
working on a Gateway PC with Micorsoft Windows XP home edition that I got
about 5 years ago. I'm not advanced enough to understand MB and GB's, but
was advised I need to upgrade my memory to 512 MB. How do I do this and can
I do it myself or do I have to take my computer someplace to have it done and
what kind of cost am I looking at? Yeah I'd love a new computer, but I
really can't afford that right now.

Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to say it, but with a 5 yerar old Gateway that came with only 256MB of
RAM, it may cost you about the same amount to upgrade the RAM (because your
type of RAM is probably not made anymore) than it would to just spend
250..00 and get a new entry level PC that would be leaps and bounds better
than what you have right now.

Not to mention that going to 512 MB isn't going to improve your system very
much because most of today's applications RAM needs plus what the operating
system needs is more than that anyway.

New, entry level PC's are VERY inexpensive and would be MUCH superior to
your Gateway.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't buy any RAM second hand.

If it has been damaged (with a simple static discharge), it's of no help.
And for all the other reasons I stated, I really believe it's time to say
goodbye to the 5 yr. old paperweight.

You can pick up dirt cheap memory on eBay. I know - I've sold DDR RAM
for peanuts, when the manufacturers still command an extremely high
new price for them.

If the OP is a novice, then what better computer than his current one
to start messing around inside and learn a bit about what makes it
tick? I do agree that 1GB would be far better than 512MB though. Start
on www.crucial.com, to work out what RAM you will need, then search
for it second-hand.
