Go to ATI's website and get the CAT uninstaller, use that to remove
your current drivers and reboot when it says to, install the new
drivers.

Go to ATI's website and get the CAT uninstaller, use that to remove
your current drivers and reboot when it says to, install the new
drivers.

I think ATI recommends going through Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs
first. Uninstall the display driver there, then reboot. Cancel when
Windows detects your card and wants to install drivers. At this point, run
the CAT uninstaller to make sure everything is removed. Reboot, cancel
again when Windows sees your card. After you get totally booted, install
the correct drivers then reboot again. Set your resolution and refresh and
you're done. It sounds like a lot a hassle, but actually only takes a few
minutes.

BTW, you _did_ uninstall the previous version before you originally updated,
right? Installing new drivers over old may work for some people forever,
but the best way is to uninstall and reboot _before_ upgrading drivers. One
more thing; the newest CAT drivers have a known problem with MOH:AA (if you
have Spearhead and/or Breakthrough installed), but I don't think there are
issues with any of the other games you mentioned.

You were REQUIRED to REMOVE the old driver BEFORE you installed the new one.
You may have to reformat the harddrive and do a fresh install of the OS and
your software to get rid of the video driver mish-mash that now exists on
your harddrive.

Not if you are using the CAT uinstaller file. Just run it and it
removes all ATI files. I do this everytime when installing new drivers
and never have an issue.

No, if he runs the CAT uninstaller he will be fine.

That may work fine. The fact remains that ATI recommends running the
uninstall from Control Panel first. Show somebody how to do it right and
they can figure out how to ad-lib themselves. I think everyone is agreed
that the OP didn't remove his old drivers first, and that's what caused his
problems.

Want to show me where ATI says to uninstall the drivers from the
add/remove panel first when using the CAT unstaller. You don't need to
do that when using the CAT uninstaller. Just running the CAT unstaller
will do a complete uninstall for you.

From the CAT uinstaller readme.

CATuninstaller.exe, 10/08/03

I think we're both trying to solve his problem from different angles.
You're pointing him to a utility that will fix his mistake of not
uninstalling before he upgraded drivers; I was trying to explain the
importance of uninstalling first, and telling him how to do that.

Go to www.ati.com
Click Customer Care link
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894
On left side, click Solve a Problem
Under that, click Installation, then ATI Drivers and Software
On the main page that comes up, click the bottom link: Installation
Procedures for ATI Products
On the next page, click Step1:Removing Old ATI Software (if applicable)

In any case, if drivers are uninstalled and installed properly, conflicts
will be minimized (some might be unavoidable). I'm sure the OP has
benefited by learning to uninstall first, and also by being made aware of a
utility that will do it for him.

Well I didnt uninstall the old drivers before I installed the new
ones...which i think was the problem. I reformatted and when
installing the same new drivers the same thing happened. It would
just freeze after the reboot...and then just restart...so I just went
to the windows update and went to custom update and chose the drivers
in the hardwear section. It still will freeze everynow and then...I
dont know what is going on...but all in all its WAY better than not
being able to use my computer at all...

THANKS for all your help!!! Much appriciated!!

Problem fixed, no need to argue about nothing.

ATI makes the cat remover for a reason, that's to not use the normal
control panel / remove programs section, ATI cards will leave parts
of themself in a way that will make the new driver being installed
not work 100% or at all, some have to be installed in safe mode to
work properly.

Using the seperate ATI driver remover will do a better job, especially
if there was a driver installed previously that caused problems,
installing a new version driver "just because it's there" may not
make a bit of difference if the original driver worked fine, however
if the first did not work using the ATI remover will be more likely
to make the system work properly.

Understanding how ATI cards work with each different driver / game
will go a long way to a trouble free system, using a driver because
it's newer is not a good idea without first reading what the driver
was made for and what it does.

Many versions simply don't work with some games and patched versions
of those games, so in that case reading what driver does and removing
the old driver and going back to an older version will get better
results, 9800's are somewhat fussy with drivers, I know as I have two
of em.

The old story of "if it works OK don't mess with it" is very true with
ATI.

A

Apollo

Yeah...I live by that rule now...dont touch it if it works...at leas
with drivers that is

It seems that 9600's can be fussy also! :

ummm...sorry to be such a noob...but I recently got Call Of Duty 2 and

System details:
Windows XP Home
AMD Athlon 3000+
512MB RAM
Radeon 9600 Video Card

I just reformatted...I installed the drivers on the Windows Update
page and in the middle of anything that involves activity from my
video card, my monitor goes into hybernation and I'll turn off the
monitor and then turn it back on and it gives me the little blue box
[with options] that you get when your monitor is on and your computer
is off. Also, sometimes it will freeze and it will go CRAZY colors
and all pixelated and then do what I described above. A friend of
mine [who is fairly smart when it comes to computers] said that it
might be my video card overheating...but he said thats usually caused
by lots of dust in the tower or wrong drivers.

I never had any problems before installing the new ATI Cat drivers
[which i didnt uninstall the previous drivers which worked FINE
before installing the new ones]. I dont recall the previous drivers
I had but I recall that I installed them when Battlefield: Vietnam
came out so it was a while ago.

Please help and sorry for being such a tard!

Uninstrall any previous ATI driver should be easy to grasp ? with AT
cards it makes all the difference

Pixelating is normally the sign of a card going west, but a new ca
driver installed over one that was working can and will do all sort
of nasty stuff

If it works, don't mess with it
