Need to start only specific programs when system boots up

Hi,

When i start my windows XP proffessional a lot of programs are started like
yahoo messenger etc and it takes lot of time for eac of these to load.

So i tried "msconfig" to customize which programs to start when the system
boots.
But each time i start i get a message from "msconfig" program that " this is
not the normal startup and suggests to revert back to normal start up (which
starts all the progs).

I want only specific programs to start when i my computer starts.

1)Is there a better way to change this apart from "msconfig" ??
2) How can i avoid that message that mscofig gives??
3) Are there any other problems i want only selective programs to start ??

Any help is appreciated
Thanks

The solution, if you want to use msconfig to control this, is don't let it
go back to normal. When the computer reboots and the msconfig splash screen
appears just check the box to tell it not to warn you again.

That said, msconfig should not be used as a startup manager. It purpose is
for troubleshooting. The better approach is to stop what programs you don't
want to run by other means.

First step should be to check in the options for the program you don't want
to start and see if there is a setting to tell it not to run at startup.
The next step is to remove any entries you don't want from the two startup
folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys in
the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Remember, Msconfig was designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a
"startup configurer." Use MSConfig to determine the location of the
command that is attempting to start the program, and remove it. To
cease the selective startup notifications, either return your settings
to the way they were, or permanently remove the undesirable programs
from your startup configuration.

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily in
the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

I heartily recommend Mike Lin's free Startup Control Panel:
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

It comes in two versions, one that installs as an applet within Control
Panel or a standalone program. There are tabs showing programs set to
run within the Startup groups and under Registry keys and stopping them
from doing so is simply a matter of unchecking a box. Start-up settings
you remove this way are stored under a Deleted tab so you can easily
restore them if you change your mind.
