Need to open Office Data File documents-cannot in word/excell etc

We have two documents that a previous employee saved as an Office Data File,
we have tried to open it under word, excell, notebook, wordpad, acrobat 5.0
and 6.0 and cannot open the file. Is there a program that it can open under
or somehow can I transfer it? I need to open these two documents ASAP.
