Need to know why MS has "rot13'ed" parts of the XP registry

B

Bill McCartney

Can any of the MVPs tell me why MS has "rot13ed" parts of the XP
registry?
It is very difficult to edit areas of the Registry because of this.

I realise that Bill Gates thinks that the ordinary man is too ignorant
to configure Windozs to thier liking, However, what exactly is the purpos
of using "rot13" in the registry?

Also,
Can some one tell me how to view the:

$AttrDef
$BadClus
$BadClus:$Bad
$BitMap
$Boot
$LogFile
$Mft
$MftMirr
$Secure
$UpCase
$Volume
$Extend
$Extend\$Reparse
$Extend\$ObjId
$Extend\$UsnJrnl
$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$Max
$Extend\$Quota

Files and folders?
Or how to get them to show on my hard drive?
Thanks,

Bill, don't know why, if you need to know what, you'll need to create an
account for yourself to download this utility.

Sorry Bill wrong link above, the one I mean to pass on...

http://r2.d2.hu/snf/system_tools/fr...lation_vnc_ntfs_registry_tweaker_hexedit.html

Scroll down to the X-setup program. It's more involved and will help you
view and edit parts of the registry. Need to pay for it otherwise just use
the evaluation version. Proceed with caution on some parts of the program if
you do use it.

My apple-logies for the previous post.

Hi Bill,

Well then, you have a great ways to go with that thinking, as we all would.
As for your broad statement, if MS didn't want you to know as much as you
wish to know, then you wouldn't have access to the registry at all.
Speaking for myself, I am grateful that we are allowed to go there and
tamper with things.)

Good luck!

Hi Guys,

I am a new member here, but dont get the wrong idea. I have been
messing with every windows OS for the last 10 years or so.

I found this thread on google, and came here hoping it would answer my
question which was basically the same as Bill's with one slight
difference.

I was getting annoyed that a file i can only see through a rootkit
revealer, was preventing me from having an efficient defrag of my hard
drive. The culprit is $Extend\$UsnJrnl, which is in 9 fragments.

The file iteself aint that big, but has a knock on effect.
It has a fragment about 3 GB down in the empty space, and as a result,
my fear.arch00 file weighing in at a hefty 3.5GB ends up being about
6GB further down the drive than it should be, and the same goes for any
files moved when bootvis is run to optimise boot time.

What annoyed me was that Bill asked a legitimate question, and was
given no constructive attempt at an answer.
And as for being allowed to access the registry, an OS is designed to
integrate other applications into it, and as a result repairs need to
be done in unforseen situations.
an example being Norton products interfering with the size of your
pagefile. Therefore i aint glad i'm allowed to access the registry, I
expect to be able to!

And as an aside SP2 is the most patronising piece of software MS has
released to date and an absolute no-no for anyone who knows anything
about customising their XP install. Its basically sinking to the same
level as HP, Compaq, and to some extent Dell, - designing PC's for
choobs who apparently cant be trusted to access the bios they bought,
and dont knowhow to reinstall without first repartitioning the entire
drive.
Why all the effort on SP2 when Vista beta still doesn't support SATA
drives if you have no floppy or 2nd IDE drive.

But to prove I aint anti MS, Visual Studio 6 is the best piece of
coding kit I ever used, shame the new stuff is not as good.

Lol,

Found the solution and the culprit.

Apparently only certain programs create or access the USN Journal.

The only program on my PC using it is MSN messenger live beta.

to delete the journal on drive C

fsutil.exe usn deletejournal /D C:

from cmd prompt.

And to create one in case of problems at a default size

fsutil.exe usn createjournal m=0 a=0 C:

also from a command prompt.

trust it to be a microsoft application causing my problem, always
bleeding is.
