I have been using several external Hard Drives (Maxtor) via Firewire
on a Dell Notebook Computer. I think I may have a firewire problem
as the disks frequently drop off line for some reason but are
generally useful and quite fast while operating. They tend to drop
offline when not being used and programs will subsequently hang for
lack of access to files from those drives.
I have on two or three occasions had dropoffs occur at inopportune
times and have compromised the disk Access Table. I then get a
message to the effect that the disk is not formatted and will have to
be reformatted.
I am running Windows XP Professional. The Maxtor disks are shipped
with FAT32 formatting. Windows XP does not offer me that capability
and only seems to let me format with NTFS. I have done that and it
seems to work. However, I would like to Format the disk with FAT32
and have found that disks which have been compromised and cannot be
read on my current Windows XP machine can still be read on my 3 year
old Windows 98SE machine. On two occasions I have reformatted disks
on the Windows 98 Machine into FAT32.
Now for my question. How would I best get the one disk that is now
in NTFS format back into FAT32. If I hook it up to the Windows 98
machine, it is not recognized. This is no doubt because it is
Formatted as NTFS. I would like to change it to FAT32 so I can
transfer data between the two computers. However, Windows XP cannot
seem to reformat to FAT32.
Do I need to obtain special software to do this. Maxtor does seem to
ship their disks as FAT32 but does not include a FORMAT capability on
the disk they ship with it.
Is there a way to get the older Windows 98SE machine to recognize the
disk that is Formatted as NTFS. I do not need to read it but just
recognize it so that I can use the Windows 98SE Format program to
reformat it as a FAT32 disk.
I am willing to buy some software if needed as I would like to get all
my disks into the FAT32 format. All are currently in that format
with the exception of the one that I reformatted as NTFS.
