Need to block network access for one computer

I have a network at work with many computers on it. One computer is used by
many different people and they have access to the network files and to the
internet once they log in. However, the many users at that computer have no
need to get on the network or access the internet. The only ever need the
computer to work on local items that don't require any network access or
internet access. Is there a way to set up that computer so that a particular
user has to enter a password before they can access the network or the
internet since I've had problems with people accessing websites and files
that they shouldn't be on??

Hi
If the computer Does Not need the Network, and or Internet connection,
unplug the Network cable.
Otherwise, what type of topology do you use (peer-to-peer, or real server
OS)?
How the Network is connected to the Internet?

Jack,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I can't simply disconnect the network
cable because there are occasions where a user would need access to the
network and/or the internet. Disconnecting the cable would become cumbersome
due to the location of the computer terminal and router. To answer your one
question, the company connects to the internet through a cable modem. To
answer your other question, we have peer-to-peer networking. We do not use a
centrally located server OS. Any input??

Thanks,

Are you using a router to connect your peer-to-peer network to the cable
modem? If so some routers allow you to block internet access based on the
local LAN IP of a particular PC. Check the users manual for the router or
consider purchasing a router that has that feature.

Al,

The cable modem doubles as the router. So yes, I have a router. If my
router/modem has this capability, do you think it would only block internet
access? Or could I block all network access as well? The culprits are
getting into shared network files as well and so I need to stop their network
access.

You might look at setting up the XP SP2 Windows Firewall on the machines you
want to limit access to so File & Print Sharing custom address scope is
limited to certain local LAN IP addresses. All other addresses are
blocked...
