We currently have an old hp colorado 8gb external tape unit working on
a win98 pc. There are 10PC in total in the office. Some of these PCs
have winxp and some have win98. We do not have a server. So, my
question is as follows...

Option 1
- Use win98 PC as a backup server
- Use HP Colorado II software to backup PCs to a folder within the PC
"backup server"
- Backup the PC backup server to tape at the end of the day
- Problem: HP Colorado Backup II software cannot backup to HD or there
is no option to backup to HD

Option 2
- Use win98 PC as a backup server
- Use MS Backup software to backup PCs to a folder within the PC
"backup server"
- Backup the PC backup server to tape at the end of the day
- Problem: MS Backup software doesn't see the tape unit!

How do I solve this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Too dinosaury.
- Use HP Colorado II software to backup PCs
to a folder within the PC "backup server"

Makes much more sense to use True Image.
- Backup the PC backup server to tape at the end of the day

WAY too dinosaury. Makes much more sense to backup that
PC onto an external hard drive and move that out of the office
physically so its only a nuisance if the place burns down etc.
- Problem: HP Colorado Backup II software cannot
backup to HD or there is no option to backup to HD

Toss it in the bin and use something like True Image.

The tape is WAY past its useby date.
How do I solve this problem?

See above.

You could always backup the MS backup file to tape using Colorado, but I
wouldn't let my worst enemy venture in that direction.

I tend to agree with the other poster: you need better backup tools.
Hint: Iomega, Quantum GoVault, for disk based backups, Exabyte VXA to
stay with a reel.

LOL!!! Totally agree but unfortunatelly this is what we have right
now!!!
I'm trying to get us a newer PC with windows XP or a version of linux
with an external HD or at least a CD/DVD unit.
I'm just trying to make use of what I have on my hands at the moment.
Thanks for your reply.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it would be much more
straightforward to switch on over to DVD. You could do that for a
small price - $40 for a drive, $40 for a spindle of blanks, and $30
for True Image. A couple of removable/external HDs wouldn't be much
more, and the optimum low-cost solution would be an external HD with a
DVDR. You could do that for under $200, and it would be a far more
robust solution than the Colorado, even with the poor DVDR
reliability.

I ran Colorado drives way back when, and they were nothing but
trouble. Drive reliability was terrible, tapes were expensive and
unreliable, and the software was quirky. I moved to 8mm and never
looked back, but I have to say, leaving tape behind completely was a
great moment.

I'm honestly a bit astonished that there are still Colorado systems in
regular use today. I thought they'd have given up the ghost long ago.
